Roman Baths

Tucked away between 42 and 42a Melyd Avenue, in a residential area of Prestatyn are the remains of a Roman Bath House.

History of The Roman Bath House

These modest, yet well preserved remains were discovered in 1934 and are believed to have been part of a ‘small military station’. It was used by 20^th legion (XX VV) soldiers that were posted not far away at Deva, Chester around AD120.  It’s thought their presence in the area has to do with lead and silver mining in Fflint.

The evacuation of the Roman Baths in Prestatyn revealed a furnace area, several typical rooms (Caldarium, Tepidarium and Frigidarium) and a plunge pool. Look closely and you’ll see roman pipe work which brought spring water for each of the rooms. Roman Baths in Prestatyn are the first example of a spa in the town. The Caldarium, the hottest room was where the soldiers sweated, exfoliated (or scraped ek!) and then oiled their skins. In the Tepidarium, like a modern day spa, this was the place where the Roman relaxed in the warm air, before heading to a cooler room to chat, lift weights or play board games.

This compact historic site in Prestatyn in North Wales is not signposted, so it’s best to use google maps to help you find it. Information is displayed in English and Welsh.

Prestatyn Roman Baths are a 38 minute walk from The Beaches Hotel and Spa or a 10 minute drive.
